Overview

Sierra Lobo, offers customers a full range of professional and technical capabilities, including Test and Evaluation, Systems Engineering, and Advanced Technologies.  We also develop products and processes related to Cryogenic Fluid and Thermal Management Systems, Densified Propellant Management Systems, and Prototype Extreme Pressure and Temperature Systems.  Our customers include the Department of Defense (DoD), the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, Missile Defense Agency (MDA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

 

This position is located at our Milan Ohio facility.

This internship is for Fall 2025.

 

Responsibilities

Join a small, hands-on R&D team building software for robots and space systems. As a Computer Science intern, you’ll write production-quality code, build lightweight internal tools, and help prototype algorithms in simulation before hardware testing. You’ll collaborate across software, hardware, and systems to integrate features, test end-to-end behavior, and turn ideas into demos that inform our products. Expect fast feedback and large amounts of learning by doing.

 

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, unit-test, and debug features for software systems
  • Build and maintain simulation scenarios to validate algorithms before hardware testing
  • Contribute to hardware-in-the-loop tests and sensor/actuator integration with embedded or edge devices
  • Assist with lab experiments and data collection/analysis
  • Build lightweight internal scripts and automation that support our products and engineering workflows
  • Partner with software, hardware, and systems engineers to integrate components and validate end-to-end functionality
  • Participate in code reviews; document your work; use Git, issue tracking, and CI/CD best practices
  • Attend team meetings, contribute ideas, and estimate development effort and schedules

Qualifications

  1. Required Qualifications

    • Pursuing a B.S./M.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
    • Strong Python skills and comfort with core CS topics (data structures/algorithms, debugging, complexity basics)
    • Git proficiency and experience with unit tests, issue tracking, and basic CI workflows
    • Working knowledge of Linux command line and scripting
    • Clear written/verbal communication; ability to document work and collaborate in code reviews

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Robotics/simulation experience (Isaac Sim/Omniverse, ROS/ROS 2, Gazebo, or similar)
    • Numerical/scientific Python (NumPy, SciPy), data handling (Pandas), plotting (Matplotlib)
    • Computer vision or ML exposure (OpenCV, PyTorch/TensorFlow) for perception or data pipelines
    • Development tools basics: Docker, bash, simple CI pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI)
    • C++ for performance-critical components, or JS/TypeScript for internal tools
    • Hardware familiarity: microcontrollers, serial/I2C/SPI, sensors/actuators, or hardware-in-the-loop testing
    • Domain interest in aerospace/robotics, controls, or real-time systems

    Sierra Lobo is a provider of engineering and technical services, including hardware fabrication and testing, to the aerospace and transportation industries. The work environment is a casual office and R&D lab.
