Overview

 

The Test Facilities Operation, Maintenance and Engineering (TFOME) team at the NASA Glenn Research Center providesengineering and technical services in the areas of aeropropulsion and space propulsion and power test facilities. TFOME management is dedicated to excellence in service and to providing outstanding technical opportunities for our employees. We specialize in providing unique products and services to NASA Glenn.  We are currently seeking Mechanical Test Engineer Inter candidates to join our team that will work with Senior Engineers in the planning, design, and technical execution of mechanical engineering/technical tasks for a wide variety of mechanical systems, test related apparatus, and specialty hardware for an assigned test or facility project at a research test facility on the TFOME contract at the NASA Glenn Research Center.

Responsibilities

 

FUNCTION OF POSITION

Work with Senior Engineers in the planning, design, and technical execution of mechanical engineering/technical tasks for a wide variety of mechanical systems, test related apparatus, and specialty hardware for an assigned test or facility project at a research test facility.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Work directly with NASA and TFOME engineers. This could involve cross-disciplinary teamwork, where communication and collaboration between different teams are crucial for success.

2. May develop and test technologies related to aviation, such as improving aircraft designs, studying aerodynamics, or enhancing flight safety. Or related to space exploration, researching propulsion systems, scientific research, satellite development, or other space-related initiatives.

3. May develop, execute, or review tests for systems, equipment, for aircraft or spacecraft. This could include things like structural testing, environmental testing, thermal tests, vibration testing, and more ensuring everything meets the standards for aviation or space missions.

4. Specific test projects might include design of mechanical systems and or test hardware, overseeing mechanical hardware fabrication, mechanical system and hardware installation, writing specifications for hardware and test requirements, and final report generation. Test projects cover a wide variety of test types in many facilities including wind tunnels, air-breathing engine and engine component facilities, acoustic chambers, space propulsion (chemical and electrical) and space environment chambers including cryogenic applications.

5. Analyze mechanical system requirements to match system capabilities with test requirements.

6. Prepare documentation, specifications and purchase requisitions for mechanical facility equipment supporting facility development efforts. Evaluating vendor proposals and provides technical recommendations for procurement.

7. Develop and update system schematics, drawings, technical procedures, and quality control (ISO 9001) documentation.

Qualifications

1. Must be working in and completed a minimum of 2 years curriculum towards a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering (e.g. Mechanical, Aerospace, etc.) or equivalent.

2. Able to work with Senior Engineers in the planning, design, and technical execution of mechanical engineering/technical tasks and project management for a wide variety of mechanical systems including, hydraulics, high vacuum, cryogenics, pneumatics, fluid mechanics, fluid dynamics, aerodynamics, and mechanical designs.

3. General knowledge/experience of one or more aspects related to Mechanical aerospace/space testing and facility operations are highly desirable.

4. General understanding of fluid flow (liquid and gaseous), thermodynamics, mechanics, motor/pump/fan operation desirable.

5. Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to quickly integrate into a team environment.
