The Test Facilities Operation, Maintenance and Engineering (TFOME) contract at the NASA Glenn Research Center providesengineering and technical services in the aeronautics, space power and propulsion test facilities. We are currently looking for an experienced Engineering Techncian.


  1. Designs, develops, and constructs major units, devices, or equipment; conducts tests or experiments; analyzes results and redesigns or modifies equipment to improve performance; and reports results.

  2.  From general guidelines and specifications (e.g., size or weight requirements), develops designs for equipment without critical performance requirements which are difficult to satisfy such as engine parts, research instruments, or special purpose circuitry. Analyzes technical data to determine applicability to design problems; selects from several possible design layouts; calculates design data; and prepares layouts, detailed specifications, parts lists, estimates, procedures, etc. May check and analyze drawings or equipment to determine adequacy of drawings and design.

  3.  Plans or assists in planning tests to evaluate equipment performance. Determines test requirements, equipment modification, and test procedures; conducts tests using all types of instruments; analyzes and evaluates test results and prepares reports on findings and recommendations.

  4.  Design & develop new opto-mechanical, electro-mechanical & electronic components optical measurement systems and for digital camera image acquisition & control systems. Install & operate these systems in various test facilities for the purpose of characterizing the performance of aircraft & spacecraft propulsion system and control system components. Installation & setup of computer control systems and computers for data acquisition & storage; design & construction of electronic circuits; selecting materials, components, and vendors; managing equipment transportation and setup logistics; providing onsite project support at test facilities.


  1. Associate of Engineering Technology degree, or a minimum of 8 to 10 years' experience in a related technical field.

  2.  Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of large hazardous research aerospace test facilities.

  3.  Qualified to operate, maintain, & troubleshoot laser equipment and associated hardware. Experience with set up, alignment, troubleshooting & maintenance of wide range of laser systems including gas tube or diode pumped, high energy and /or high power liquid cooled pulsed YAGs a big plus.  Candidate must have at least 10 years of related work experience in a technical environment and possess a two-year associates degree in Electronics Technology from an accredited Technical College or University.  Able to read and interpret schematics effectively with minimal supervision.  Capable of using electronic test equipment for troubleshooting components and electrical systems. 

  4.  5 years’ experience in Electronics, Mechanical, Fiber Optics and Optical Alignment preferred.

  5.  CAD experience is a plus.

  6.  Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from engineering or supervision.

  7.  Ability to use own judgment and decisions to allow continuity of workflow.

  8.  Must be self-motivated and a "Team Player" with good interpersonal and communication skills.

  9.  Must be able to organize time and assignments to properly prioritize efforts for maximum effectiveness.
