    Sierra Lobo, offers customers a full range of professional and technical capabilities, including Test and Evaluation, Systems Engineering, and Advanced Technologies. We also develop products and processes related to Cryogenic Fluid and Thermal Management Systems, Densified Propellant Management Systems, and Prototype Extreme Pressure and Temperature Systems. Our customers include the Department of Defense (DoD), the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, Missile Defense Agency (MDA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

     

    This position is located on the ETIS II contract at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

    Responsibilities

    FUNCTION OF POSITION

    The Optics junior technician supports a variety of optical alignment, integration and test operations to include metrology of spacecraft and critical ground support equipment components using traditional optical instruments and mechanical inspection devices, setup and use of laser-based metrology systems, and cryogenic-testing of optical components. This is frequently done as part of an engineer/technician team paired with either an ETIS II or civil servant engineer.
     
    May also perform other duties associated within area of assignment as directed by lead personnel or management.

     

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Provide alignment support to function engineers and senior technicians for metrology of scientific instruments and spacecraft systems.
    2. Learn to operate all optical instruments in Optics Branch/AI&T group inventory.
    3. Learn to setup and initialize Spatial Analyzer theodolite, laser radar and laser tracker sessions.
    4. Learn to calibrate/maintain optical instruments in the Optics Branch/AI&T group inventory.
    5. Maintain calibration and serviceability of optical instrumentation and accessories assigned to projects.
    6. Support cryogenic-test activities including dewar operation and metrology.
    7. Maintain lab facility cleanliness and organization of equipment.
    8. Additional equipment maintenance and logistical duties as required.

    NATURE OF POSITION CHALLENGES

    1. Assignments typically require precision work, attention to detail and judgment to request assistance when needed.
    2. Identify design and operational problems.
    3. Help develop solutions in situations where standard engineering methods, procedures, and techniques may not be applicable.

    SUPERVISOR GUIDANCE

    Supervisor or engineer/senior technician provides direction and oversight on all activities, completed work is reviewed for compliance with overall project objectives by senior engineers and technicians.

     

    SUPERVISION OF OTHERS

     

    Does not normally provide direct supervision. Lead personnel are responsible for providing technical direction, organizing work load.

     

    Qualifications

     

    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS 

    1. Education or years’ experience commensurate with skill level required for position complexity as determined by management.
    2. Specialized training & operator certification pertaining to area
    3. Experience –Requires minimum of 2 years related experience or 1-year direct experience to the area of assignment.
    4. Knowledge of engineering terms and ability to efficiently operate computers required.
    5. Ability to perform under supervision, read and follow technical procedures, & work from sketches/drawing required.
    6. Working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of large hazardous research aerospace test facilities.
    7. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from engineering documents or supervision.
    8. Ability to use own judgment and decisions to allow continuity of work flow.
    9. Must be self-motivated and a "Team Player" with good interpersonal and communication skills.
    10. Must be able to adhere to schedule and time requirements for assignments to achieve maximum effectiveness.
    11. Must be capable of passing required physical examinations and successfully completing assigned training or other related training or certifications as directed by ETIS II management.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    1. Works from ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, scissor lifts, etc.
    2. Works while bending, standing, stooping, kneeling, or in a prone position for extended time periods.
    3. Works in closely confined spaces.
    4. Lifts and carries items up to 35 pounds, sometimes up and down stairways, where lifting devices and hoists are not available.
    5. Pushes and pulls heavy objects.
    6. Ability to use hearing and vision protection.
    7. Ability to distinguish colors.


    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    1. Work indoors in ambient conditions, frequently in a clean room environment.
    2. Work with other personnel in a group that is Team Oriented.
    3. Accept and work within established policies and procedures pertaining to company rules and regulations.

     

    EQUIPMENT AND MACHINES INVOLVED IN WORK TASK

    1. Optical instrumentation such as theodolites, transits, tilt levels, autocollimators and alignment telescopes.
    2. General tools and mechanical inspection equipment
    3. Scissor lifts
    4. Class 1, 2, and 3 lasers and with training, Class 4
    5. Metrology systems such as laser trackers, radars and articulating coordinate measuring arms.
    6. Desktop computers utilizing Microsoft office suite software including Word and Excel.

     

    REQUIRED TRAINING

     The following on the job training and certifications are required to perform job functions:

                Clean Room Access

                Mobile Aerial Platform Operator

                Cryogenic Liquid Safety and Oxygen Deficiency Hazards

                Electrical Static Discharge Awareness

                Laser Operations Safety

                Hazard Waste Generator Management

    Specific project-related safety courses as required

     

    CRITICALITY OF ATTENDANCE

    Work assignments are usually during normal work hours, but flexibility is frequently necessary to support test schedules and operations.  Testing may occur any day or time of day, depending on the schedule and test requirements, and may require working off-shifts or weekends and travel.  Attendance as dictated by the tasks assigned is required to maintain team effectiveness.
