The Test Facilities Operations, Maintenance, and Engineering (TFOME) II Contract at the NASA Glenn Research Center, Plum Brook Station is searching for candidates to perform mechanical-related technical effort on test laboratory, facility and/or research hardware and mechanical systems.


This individual is responsible for assisting in the preparation and operation of intricate research test packages in laboratory test facilities performing the following job duties:

  1. Welding horizontally, overhead, and vertically using oxy-acetylene, AC-DC electric arc, M.I.G., and T.I.G. using a variety of material including stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, copper, brass, etc.
  2. Laying out and building complex tubing systems using flaring machines and tubing benders.
  3. Fabricating, installing, operating, and maintaining mechanical control test panels, cryogenic systems including liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen, liquid nitrogen, or liquid helium.
  4. Operating hydraulic systems, high-pressure gas systems including gas tubers, pressure reduction stations, pressure pumps, and seals, etc.
  5. Disassembling repairs, reassembling and verifying various types of valves, valve operators, and pressure regulators.
  6. General maintenance on mechanical vacuum pumping equipment, diffusion pumps, cryo-pumps, steam ejector systems, heat exchangers, and cryogenic vaporizers.
  7. Operating, maintaining, and calibrating leak detection systems. Inspecting and evaluating mechanical equipment and facility operating systems.
  8. Operating facility cranes, forklifts, rigging equipment and material, including lifting straps, chain hoists, etc., large mechanical tools such as a drill press, power hacksaw, band saw, shears, pipe threaders, brakes, rollers, lathes, and grinders, as well as, small power tools including air wenches, drills, grinders, etc.


A Journeyman certificate in Research Laboratory Mechanic skills, or equivalent skill and experience in another mechanical trade such as maintenance mechanic, machine repair, etc., or an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Engineering Technology plus at least two to four years of related experience is required.

A working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of research test facilities, having a basic understanding of environmental test chambers, mass spectrometer leak detectors, and vacuum systems is a plus.
