Overview

Sierra Lobo, offers customers a full range of professional and technical capabilities, including Test and Evaluation, Systems Engineering, and Advanced Technologies.  We also develop products and processes related to Cryogenic Fluid and Thermal Management Systems, Densified Propellant Management Systems, and Prototype Extreme Pressure and Temperature Systems.  Our customers include the Department of Defense (DoD), the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, Missile Defense Agency (MDA), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

 

This position is located on the ETIS II contract at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt Maryland.

Responsibilities

FUNCTION OF POSITION

Performs Simple to complex tasks following procedures working under the direction of the test engineer and/or technical lead. Will primarily be assigned to operations of the environmental test facilities and pre-test activities in support of structural testing in the Building 7/10/15/29 complex. Depending on assignment, assists flight project and test engineers in: performing spacecraft environmental tests; repairing equipment; assembly of ground support equipment or other duties associated within area of assignment as directed by the engineering or ETIS II management staff.

 

May provide technical direction to others as part of a team. May also perform duties during cross-utilization in areas such as electrical and mechanical maintenance, cleanroom ops, thermal blanket fab, mechanical integration or other duties associated with area of assignment. May also perform other duties associated within area of assignment as directed by lead personnel or management.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  1. Competently operate all mechanical test facilities and associated equipment in Building 7/10/15/29 complex either independently or on a team. Additional duties include but are not limited to, installing measurement transducers, such as accelerometers and strain gages, connecting signal conditions and operating data acquisition systems.  All operations require complete, clear and accurate documentation.  Will record task operations in test logs, checklists and work sheets as required by NASA requirements and ETIS management.
  2. Also responsible for leading test set-up activities which includes but not limited to assembly of test fixtures, mounting adapters, erecting scaffolding, and modify fixtures as directed by flight project and test engineering or ETIS management. Will also be responsible for issuing maintenance requests and have an above average knowledge of facility equipment and utility infrastructure.
  3. May also be requested to train for other personnel and be cross-utilized and cross-trained to support all groups within the ETIS Contract in order to develop an overlapping workforce.
  4. May be required to support testing in areas out of the Building 7/10/15/29 complex to include travel.
  5. May also perform temporary duties in other areas or other duties associated with area of assignment.

NATURE OF POSITION CHALLENGES 

  1. Must be able to follow complex procedures, plans, techniques, designs, or layouts. Perform multiple non-routine complex tasks with minimal supervision and maintain high quality of testing. Required at all times to follow projects to completion and understands group goals and process to achieve accomplishments.
  2. Ability to adapt to changing shifts, weekend and holiday support on short notice and extended hours as required.

SUPERVISOR GUIDANCE

Works under the minimal direction of the lead technician, engineering or management staff.  Work is reviewed for technical adequacy and satisfaction of requirements by engineering and management staff.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS 

  1. Education or years’ experience commensurate with skill level required for position complexity as determined by management.
  2. Knowledge of Eng. terms and ability to operate computers is required. Ability to perform with minimal supervision and to read and interpret schematics, work from sketches and drawings, is required.
  3. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of all test facilities and utility infrastructure located in the Building. 7/10/15/29 testing complex.
  4. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from engineering or management.
  5. Ability to use own judgment and decisions to allow continuity of work flow.
  6. Must be self-motivated and a "Team Player" with good interpersonal and communication skills.
  7. Must be able to organize time and assignments to prioritize efforts for maximum effectiveness.
  8. Must be capable of passing required physical examinations and successfully completing assigned training or other required training or certifications as directed by ETIS II management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

  1. Works from ladders, scaffolding, catwalks, cranes, boatswain chairs, suspended platforms or cages, etc.
  2. Works while bending, standing, stooping, kneeling or in a prone position for extended times.
  3. Works in closely confined spaces.
  4. Lift and carry items up to 35 pounds.
  5. Pushes and pulls heavy objects.
  6. Ability to use hearing and vision protection and respiratory equipment.
  7. Ability to distinguish eight color panel display.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 EQUIPMENT AND MACHINES INVOLVED IN WORK TASK 

  1. Vibration exciters, acoustic exciters and ancillary equipment.
  2. Hydraulic loading equipment, such as MTS testers and load cylinders
  3. Computerized controls and specialized electronic equipment
  4. Man lifts such as JLG, Handy Herman, Bucket truck, etc.
  5. Cranes, fork lifts.
  6. Mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic hand tools.
  7. Up to 1½ ton trucks and vehicles.
  8. Desktop computers utilizing Microsoft Office Suite software including Word and Excel.

CRITICALITY OF ATTENDANCE

Regular daily attendance and reporting on time is required to maintain shift effectiveness. Overtime (Holidays, Weekends, Scheduled and Unscheduled) and Shift Work may be required
